MICROBLOGGING

  • is the act of communicating online through short written messages which are often limited by a specific number of characters (such as the 140 character limit in Twitter). Messages can include text, images, video, and useful links to other messages and websites.

Microblogging allows teachers and students to communicate with other classes, students, teachers, experts, resource people around the world.

Depending on your needs and wants, microblog accounts can be set up, controlled, and accessed by
  • the TEACHER
  • the ENTIRE CLASS as a whole group, or
  • INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS.

Accounts on microblogging networks are often free to the educational community!

Suggestions for Getting Started:


Planning and preparations:
  • Establish CURRICULUM EXPECTATION(s) and a PURPOSE for your students microblogging. Choose something small.
  • EXPLORE and CHOOSE a network appropriate to your situation.
  • LEARN the basic skills necessary, yourself!
Create an account or accounts.
  • Create username and password control, privacy, and other settings appropriate to your situation.
  • N.B. Record all accounts that you create in a safe and accessible place, including all user names and passwords!
  • Share username and passwords when/if/as appropriate.
Student Learning:
  • CO-PLAN with students to CREATE a GENUINE GOAL which can be met by educational microblogging.
  • Have your STUDENTS EXPLORE the network online (without individual access).
  • Provide a COMMENTING SKILL LESSON. See "Quality Comments" and "Paper Commenting Activity" below.
  • Have students PRACTICE WRITING quality comments.
  • PROVIDE ACCESS to online accounts when required skills are demonstrated, on a "teacher/administrator approval required" basis. This is kind of set-up is available in many educational networks.
  • Provide GREATER LEVELS of ACCESS as appropriate.
